A Kodiak physician has been named the 2009 Alaska Family Physician of the Year. Doctor Kevin Creelman was selected for the honor at a conference in Seward. Creelman has practiced family medicine in Kodiak for 27 years. KMXT's Diana Gish has more.

The award was conferred at the Alaska Academy of Family Physicians Annual Scientific Conference. Doctor Creelman received many nominations from colleagues and patients. Although he was reluctant to talk about himself, I spoke with Creelman about the recently bestowed honor.

Before coming to Kodiak Creelman served three years for the Public Health Service in Kotzebue and three more years at an Anchorage clinic.

In addition to a busy clinic and hospital practice in Kodiak, Creelman has been a physician for the Kodiak Red Cross, a supervisor of local EMT's and a medical director of clinics in Sand Point, Cold Bay and the Afognak Logging Company. He's provided free weekly foot care clinics to the Kodiak Senior Center and has covered a weekly 24-hour ER shift for all of his years in Kodiak.

The Family Physician of the Year Award is the highest honor given to a member of the Alaska Academy of Family Physicians. One of the many people who nominated Creelman for the award wrote that "Kodiak is fortunate to call him our own."
