The Coast Guard is searching for a man presumed to have fallen overboard from the 685-foot container ship Sao Paulo about 754 miles southwest of Kodiak.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Charly Hengen says 37-year-old Yom Kai Bao Fang was last seen aboard the ship at 11:30 a.m. Thursday and was discovered missing approximately seven hours later after failing to report for watch.

The Sao Paulo retraced its previous course and searched the ship for five hours. All life jackets and survival gear on board were also accounted for, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard 17th District Rescue Coordination Center in Juneau was notified of the missing man at about 11 p.m. Thursday and issued an urgent marine information broadcast requesting the assistance of any vessels in the area.

An HC-130 Hercules aircraft was launched from Air Station Kodiak at 1:22 a.m. and reached the search area at 4:20 a.m. That aircraft has completed its search, but a second Hercules is scheduled to arrive on scene at about 3 p.m. today (Friday) and will search the area for about three hours before returning for fuel.

Six foot seas, 23 mile-per-hour winds and a water temperature of 59 degrees are being reported in the area.  The man was wearing a light blue jacket and dark blue pants when he was last seen.

The Sao Paulo is a Hong Kong-flagged vessel and was sailing to Mexico.
