A Kodiak Grand Jury has indicted a man for murder in the 2008 death of 41-year-old Darrell Cavaness.

Twenty-nine-year-old Chawn D. Summerall of Kodiak was indicted Thursday for second degree murder, and is set to be arraigned in the Kodiak courthouse today (Wednesday).

In January 2008, Kodiak Police responded to a report of an assault at a residence on Natalia Street, where they found Cavaness unconscious. He was taken to Providence Hospital in Anchorage where he later died. The death was ruled a homicide by the State Medical Examiner.

According to Lieutenant Ray Ellis, Deputy Chief with the Kodiak Police Department, the investigation is ongoing and further details on the sealed indictment cannot be released.

Summerall is presently in the custody of the Department of Corrections on unrelated charges. He was transported to Kodiak for arraignment. The second-degree murder charge is punishable by 10 to 99 years in jail and up to a 500-thousand-dollar fine. Summerall is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. today (Wednesday).
