            The Interior Department declared the polar bear a threatened species today, saying it must be protected because of the decline in Arctic sea ice from global warming. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne cited dramatic declines in sea ice over the last three decades and projections of continued losses. These declines, he told a news conference, mean the polar bear is a species likely to be in danger of extinction in the near future.

            The Kodiak High School Bears baseball team kicked off the 2008 season yesterday (Monday) afternoon in Soldotna, where they fell to the Stars 8 to 6.

            Doug Letch is the voice of Bears baseball for KVOK radio this season, and he spoke with Jay Barrett during today’s noon news about the first game of the year and the prospects for the team this season.

            The Bears are playing a non-conference rematch against So-Hi this afternoon. We’ll have the score for you on tomorrow morning’s newscast.
