Air Station Kodiak Preparing For Return to Arctic PDF Print E-mail

             The United States Coast Guard has begun gearing up for another summer of incursions into the high arctic. C-130 Hercules flights from Air Station Kodiak will resume later this month, as part of Operation Arctic Domain Awareness, and will continue about every two weeks through the fall.

            Rear Admiral Gene Brooks, commander of the Coast Guard's 17th District in Juneau, says the missions have a Homeland Security aspect, determining what risks certain vessels pose to the maritime community and infrastructure, the arctic environment and Native villages.

            The Arctic Domain flights resume on March 17th.

            A Kodiak man will take part in the third annual Ride Ataxia (Uh-TAX-ee-uh) bike ride, in which he will ride a specially designed bicycle from Portland, Oregon, to Seattle to help raise funds for research on a rare disease. The 200-mile ride will terminate in Seattle, where participants will attend the National Ataxia Foundation meeting.

Baranov Museum Receives Preservation Funds PDF Print E-mail

            The Baranov Museum has received an American Heritage Preservation grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in conjunction with the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to preserve an Alutiiq spruce root basket excavated from its grounds last June. American Heritage Preservation grants are awarded annually to museums, libraries and archives to treat, re-house and improve the storage environments of important collections.
