            At the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly regular meeting Thursday evening, assembly members took up the issue of Kodiak rancher Omar Stratman's appeal for an Amicus Brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in his battle over land with a local Native group. Stratman's contesting of Leisnoi Incorporated's right to approximately 115,000 acres of land dates back to 1976, when the Native corporation received lands on Kodiak and Woody islands under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971.

            It appears an improperly installed thumb latch on a luggage panel and a missing guard are to blame for a door that swung open on a chartered Servant Air flight from Kodiak last year. The plane subsequently went into a nosedive and crashed into the bay just off the end of the runway. This, according to a National Transportation Safety Board report released recently. The plane was a Piper PA-31 Navajo Chieftan, an aircraft that has experienced six similar crashes with panels swinging open since 1977, three of which occurred in Alaska.

Kodiak Guardsman Spends 25 Years at Sea PDF Print E-mail

            A Coast Guardsman stationed in Kodiak received the Coast Guard's newest honor during an informal ceremony in Kodiak when he was named "Master Cutterman." While many members of the Coast Guard wear the cutterman's insignia, which represents five years of sea service, the title of master cutterman is awarded to those having served more than 20 years at sea. 

Chief Warrant Officer Randy Salenski is currently stationed aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley and has served 25 years at sea.

            At the Kodiak City Council regular meeting on Thursday evening, the Kodiak Island Convention and Visitors Bureau presented a report on the recently completed cruise ship public forum held in October. The brief presentation took place during the "citizens to be heard" portion of the meeting.
