             One of Kodiak's own has been nominated to attend the U-S Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

            On Tuesday Senator Lisa Murkowski announced that Karsten Schick of Kodiak has made her list of 43 nominees for appointment to U-S military service academies.

            In her announcement, Murkowski described the students as "stellar candidates who have demonstrated excellent leadership capabilities and strength of character."

            Schick was selected as an academy nominee based on his academic record, extracurricular activities and potential for leadership.

            The news of his nomination by the Alaskan senator was an early Christmas present for the Kodiak High School senior.

            The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will be holding a drill conductor certification course this weekend at the Coast Guard Base. Andrew Frank is a marine science technician at the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Detachment. He says day one will be in the pool at the base and asks everyone to bring their survival suits, first for an inspection, and then to practice putting them on.

            A pair of Kodiak non-profit executives will be getting some paid time off thanks to awards made last week by the Rasmuson Foundation. Monte Hawver of the Brother Francis Shelter and Sven Haakanson of the Alutiiq Museum will be vacationing for three months each on opposite ends of the globe.
