            The Alaska Association of Harbormasters and Port Administrators Conference continues today in Kodiak. One of the presenters on the agenda is Rachel Lord of Homer.

            Lord, who works for Cook Inlet Keeper, came to Kodiak to talk to the AAHPA members about the Clean Harbor Certification Program. She's the project manager for the program which is funded by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.

            The State of Alaska is considering a remote recreation cabin land lottery on Kodiak Island on the south side of Ugak Bay.

            Natural Resource Manager Marta Mueller of the Department of Natural Resources will be holding a public open house tonight (Wednesday) at 7 in the assembly chambers to discuss the issue with residents. She spoke with KMXT's Jay Barrett about the proposal.

Southeast Portion of Afognak Closed for Registration Elk Hunt PDF Print E-mail

            The Afognak Island Roosevelt Elk registration hunt is set to open tomorrow, but while most of the island will be open to hunters who have picked up a registration permit from fish and game, the department has issued an emergency order closing the Southeastern portion of the island.

            That portion is south of a line from the head of Danger Bay to the head of Izhut Bay.

            Hunters participating in the drawing hunts that began in late September have already taken the harvest quota from the Duck Mountain herd, and any additional take may jeopardize their future productivity. Wildlife Biologist John Crye in Kodiak said the Afognak population of elk is down a bit the last few years.

              If it were up to Angela Bowling, people everywhere would start talking about domestic violence. The outreach coordinator for the Kodiak Women's Resource and Crisis Center wants to break the silence with education and dialogue. October is domestic violence awareness month and Bowling is taking every opportunity to spread the word.

KMXT's Diana Gish spoke with her about the issue that affects one out of every four women.

            This Friday KWRCC is conducting a domestic violence awareness vigil at 5:30 p.m. at Saint James Episcopal Church at 421 Thorsheim.

            The keynote speaker for the Harbormasters and Port Administrators conference was Senator Gary Stevens. He spoke this (Tuesday) morning at the Kodiak convention center.

            The Alaska Association of Harbormasters and Port Administrators conference runs through Friday. Members from around the state and the port of Seattle are in town for the event
