Tax Filing Deadline Pushed to Monday Night PDF Print E-mail

If you don't have your 2010 taxes ready to send off to the IRS, don't panic. Thanks to a local holiday in Washington, D.C. and a quirk of the calendar, American taxpayers will have until midnight Monday to file their tax returns.

Traditionally tax returns are due on April 15th, unless that day falls on a national holiday or a weekend. This year, the deadline was extended to the 18th in observance of Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia.

Emancipation Day is celebrated on different dates, but falls on April 16th in the Municipality of Washington, D.C. On that date in 1862 - nine months ahead of his famous Emancipation Proclamation, President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed more than 3,000 slaves in the District of Columbia.

Thanks to a quirk of the calendar that puts Emancipation Day on a Saturday this year, the holiday is celebrated today. And, since IRS rules say a holiday in Washington, D.C. is considered a tax holiday, same as a federal holiday, the IRS moved the tax filing deadline to Monday.

And if you don't feel you can get your taxes done by Monday, why not consider filing for a six-month extension? That would give you until mid-October.

If you have a business such as a B&B or one with another tourist oriented slant, it's not too late to think about the summer season.

One thing any locally owned business can do to greatly boost their visibility off-island and out-of-state is to get a free listing on the BuyAlaska dot com website.

The site is run by the Alaska Small Business Development Center and is a database of Alaska businesses and products.

Bryan Zak is the SBDC South West Region Director based in Kenai. He says every Alaska based business should be listed in the free directory.
