The main reason the United States Government counts its population every 10 years is to determine how many representatives to Congress each area gets. With a population around 600,000, the state of Alaska only gets one congressman. Every state gets two senators, no matter the population. The state of Alaska uses the census information in the same way: to determine the areas our state house and senate members will represent.

As Senate President, Gary Stevens is one of the people who get to appoint one of five representatives to the reapportionment board, which will decide the legislative boundaries for the next 10 years. His selection is Kodiak realtor Bob Brodie, who acknowledges the position is sensitive, the job important, and sometimes controversial.

You've no doubt heard the stories of crab fishermen who ripped up $100 dollar bills just because they could. Or the one about the guy who paid cash for a new shiny tricked-out pickup and was so drunk he forgot he'd bought it.

            Yes, those are true stories.

If you're into good fishing stories about the wild and amazing days of Kodiak's King crab fishery, you'll be happy to learn that the popular radio series about the fishery is about to begin another round of new programs.

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak HH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew medevac'd an Israeli crewman off the 964-foot container ship Zim Haifa about 97 miles east of Cold Bay Monday.

Forty-eight-year-old Aleksey Tabachnikov reportedly injured his left hand after machinery dropped on it. The Coast Guard received a call Sunday afternoon requesting a medevac for the crewmember.

Due to the distance of the Zim Haifa at the time of call, the Coast Guard recommended the vessel sail toward Cold Bay so it would be in range of the Dolphin helicopter, which was forward deployed there.

The helicopter crew hoisted Tabachnikov about 3 p.m. Monday and transferred him to Cold Bay where he was transferred to medical clinic. He was reported in stable condition.

The Zim Haifa is dry cargo Israeli-flagged vessel and is on its way from South Korea to the Panama Canal.

Weather at the time of the hoist included rain with a northeast wind of 10 to 25 mph.
