"The Madsen Bear," a sculpture owned by the City of Kodiak, has been moved to the corner of Marine Way and Center Street, at the side of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. It's now in a perfect position to greet those disembarking from the state ferry Tustumena at Pier 1 just across the street. The bear has been restless the last few years, first moving from its spot in front of Fishermen's Hall to the spit near the gazebo, and this week to its current location. Jay Barrett photo.

Not
surprisingly, Kodiak's unemployment rate fell in the month of June, down
slightly from May.
The Kodiak
Island Borough's 6-point-7 percent jobless rate was down a couple of notches
from May's 6-point- 9 percent. It was down a full percentage point from the statewide
average of 7-point-7 percent.
Overall,
there were 6,825 workers in the Kodiak borough workforce in June-up from 6,384
in May. That means 441 more people had jobs inside the Kodiak Island Borough in
June than did in May.

The
24-hour-long Relay for Life wrapped up at 6:30 Saturday evening but the
memories live on. One of the Relay's organizers, Pam Foreman, looks back on the
Relay's highlights with KMXT's Jay Barrett.
Relay for
Life event chair Mandy Clark said the preliminary total of $59,800 will grow
after more pledge forms are turned in. One event, called the "Quarter Mile," where
quarters are lined up edge-to-edge around the quarter-mile-long track,
collected about 12,000 quarters, worth about $3,000.
