FV Polar Star aground Tuesday in the Shelikof Strait. US Coast Guard photo

The fishing vessel Polar Star, which ran aground in the Shelikof Strait on Tuesday, is being towed back to Kodiak today. The Coast Guard reported that the 58-foot seiner was refloated on midnight's high tide.

After the accidental grounding Tuesday, the crew intentionally beached in the shelter of Geographic Harbor to make temporary repairs during low water. Geographic Harbor is on the Alaska Peninsula.

About 1,500 gallons of fuel was lightered from the seiner to help refloat it. It's being towed back to Kodiak by the fishing vessel Atlantico, and should arrive this evening, where permanent repairs will be made.

The Polar Star ran aground Tuesday morning about 65 miles west of Kodiak city. No injuries or pollution was reported, and the Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Kodiak will be investigating.
