$18.4-Million Slated for Kodiak SEAL Base

While it’s still early in the budget process, Kodiak’s SEAL team training center is included in a funding package for military readiness.

Nearly $400 million for Alaska projects is included in the Fiscal Year 2012 National Defense Authorization Act which was approved Tuesday by a Senate Armed Services Subcommittee.

If funded, the Kodiak based Naval Special Warfare Center Detachment would receive $18.4 million to construct a multi-story Cold Weather Maritime Training Facility. The project renovates and modernizes interiors of three buildings. The 25,000 square foot facility would include instruction, administrative, berthing and storage areas. There will also be space for washing vehicles

As part of its justification for the project, the funding request says training in the Kodiak setting is essential for operations increasingly faced in cold weather, and that no other facility in a maritime environment is readily available.

Alaska Senator Mark Begich is a subcommittee member and said that despite these times of fiscal restraint, American still needs to invest in critical projects that keep bases viable and give the military the resources they need.

In addition to the Kodiak project, Anchorage and Fairbanks installations would also get chunks of the nearly $400 million for military construction.

The federal fiscal year attached to this proposed funding begins Oct. 1.
