19 Percent of Registered Voters Cast Ballots at Regular Municipal Election

A canvass board of four people has gone through all the write-ins and ballots for the Kodiak Island Borough’s regular municipal election and come to the conclusion that 19 percent of registered voters cast ballots last week. That’s down from 22 percent last year, but up from 17 percent in 2013.

Kodiak Island Borough Clerk Nova Javier explains that’s because there’s a trend for more people to vote on years where there’s a state election. And she says it’s likely next year will see another spike in the overall turnout because of the upcoming presidential election.

This year, out of all the precincts, the highest percentage of voter turnout was from Ouzinkie: 35 percent or 50 out of 144 registered voters cast their ballots. The total 19 percent percent for all precincts represents 1800 people out of 9585 registered voters.

10/22 Correction: A previous version stated that the write-ins and ballots were for the Kodiak regular municipal election, which is unclear. The percentages in this article refer to the Kodiak Island Borough specifically.
